Things I no longer believe

If you’re interested in truth, some of your views shift over time. Here’s some stuff I believed in 2004 that I don’t believe in 2024:

* Contraception is fine, it doesn’t affect you much

* Grand ancient architecture was built by Aliens

* Internet communication will end wars

* We will take vacations on Mars soon

* Anyone can have out-of-body experiences

* I need to sit down and release all negative emotions to feel better

* Raw milk is dangerous

* Vaccines are great

* I should be here now

Etc.

Writing a list of things you no longer believe is a good exercise in keeping your Ego in check. The Ego doesn’t like to be seen as wrong, lacking, ignorant, etc. so you won’t see admitting to errors-in-belief. Think about your favorite public figures: How many of them have admitted to fundamental belief-errors?

Error confession liberates the mind from unreality. Wise people only have very few “absolute 100% certain” beliefs.

Ever felt annoyed by someone having certainty of something they’ve never experienced? The attitude creates a veil that prevents perception outside of their belief. In extreme forms it borders on mental illness. Another thing the Ego dislikes is being shown beliefs outside of its bubble. It will defend its fragile bubble (bubbles are fragile!) by ignoring or attacking the unaligned thought-form.

The better way is to a) debate the concept or b) to acknowledge and park it for another time when there’s enough free mental space to consider new ideas.
