What Different Handshakes mean
The first impression of someone is often the handshake.
There are dozens of handshakes that show insecurity and only ONE type that shows confidence.
The types that show insecurity:
* A weak and limp handshake (communicates fear)
* Wet hands (often caused by nervousness),
* Exaggerated handshake, too much shaking or gripping too hard (often points to a hidden agenda),
* Twisting the other hand to have the “upper hand” or palm facing downwards or on top of the other hand (an attempt to dominate or subdue),
* Offering the palm facing upwards or below the other hand (shows submission),
* Secret code handshakes – for example the masonic handshake where one finger is extended to the lower wrist of the other, which is supposed to transmit ones own energy to that person (appears silly or cringe-worthy to most people)
Etc.
I’ve experienced every type of awkward handshake and then some.
The only handshake that communicates inner confidence is the one that’s neither upper or lower, neither hard nor soft. It’s straight, brief and the pressure exerted is aligned with the other.
This creates a sense of mutual respect and that both begin their meeting on the same level, regardless of rank, position or actual differences.
A handshake does transfer energy between the two parties. 🔁
In recent years, especially since the “pandemic”, fist-bump has become popular. The real purpose is to avoid transferring energy.
Standing in a circle, holding hands is the strongest form of energy-transfer and interesting things happen when people are aligned in this way (see my book “Healing and Energy Circles”). Some (mostly women) who greet each other holding both hands, bond or ice-break more quickly.
If you hold out your hand, most people reflexively offer theirs, out of habit. It’s not a good idea to consciously withhold a handshake, unless there’s something wrong with the person.
In the first eye-contact and first handshake, other people’s subconscious already form opinions about you, so you might as well make sure it’s good.
