The intensity of a pain can be reduced by breathing.
Breathe goes through the lungs and the entire bloodstream, releasing blood of all toxins before flowing out again. This detox quality can be directed to specific body parts in which you are experiencing emotional or physical discomfort.
You intend for your breathe to go there. Or you place attention to the pain, while breathing into it and relaxing on the out-breathe. We already do this instinctively from birth, it’s not something we need to be taught.
Put attention on an area of discomfort. Take a deep and slow breathe through the nose. Breathe out through nose or mouth slowly.
Repeat.
And repeat once more.
By now you already notice an improvement.
That’s the basic method. If the discomfort was small, it’s already gone. If it’s bigger, you may require more breathing or additional intervention. For example if your shoulder is dislodged, you’ll have to let an expert bring it back into place, that won’t happen with breathing. The pains that can be released with breathing are pains that are created by mind.
You could experiment with alternating attention between the center of the discomfort and the space around and outside of the discomfort. This releases fixation which, in some instances, is the cause of increased pain.
Or you might alternate between the pain and a pain-free area of your body. For example, you put attention on the hurting right knee, breathe. Then on the pain-free left knee, breathe. Then you imagine transfering the pain-free feeling to the right knee, breathe. Then you repeat this cycle of three a few more times.
Or you could imagine sending a medicine of a specific color to the area. Let the discomfort tell you which color it wants to receive and flood the area with that color while breathing with it. Colors carry different vibrations and the area may need some blue, some green, some purple, some red or whatever you sense.
You can combine breathing with talking to the body part or commanding it to heal. Any of these variations can create further relief and I’ve used them all in my work – attention, removing-attention, touch, color, sound and breathe.
