Lack of stress is deadly

Biosphere 2 was a scientific experiment where they built an entire enclosed eco-system, a safe-space utopia where lifeforms were supposed to thrive.

The experiment failed. One of the reasons it failed was the lack of wind and storms.

Without wind, trees didn’t develop “stress wood”. This caused the trees to grow quickly but remain brittle and weak, without deep roots. They collapsed under their own weight.

The experiment showed that natural environmental stress is essential for structural stability. A tree needs snow storms, the heat of summer sun, rain, wind to grow a tougher skin. It also showed that rapid growth without developing roots is catastrophic.

I say the same applies to humans. A “safe space” life, insulated from any offense, challenge or risk is just as deadly as too much stress. Don’t spend too much time being pampered, coddled and “staying safe” and trying to avoid being “offended” or “triggered”. And don’t do that with your children either. Take medium risks, intentionally put yourself into difficult situations and embrace the unknown.
