How to use the Upscaling Method to quit smoking

I recently published a book called “The Upscaling Method”. Here’s an example of how to use it to quit or reduce smoking.

A cigarette smoker asks how they can quit smoking.

Fred: If you’re going to be smoking, can you at least upscale from Cigarettes to Cigars? They have a little less chemicals and toxins. Maybe you’ve noticed that success-types prefer cigars to cigarettes.

Student: OK.

A week later.

Fred: How is it?

Student: Good. I used to smoke a pack a day. But I can’t smoke more than one cigar a day, it’s just so intense. It tastes better and I feel less addicted.

Fred: Great. Want to upscale more?

Student: Yes.

Fred: Then switch to pipe smoking. It’s milder. More relaxed. More meditation. And much cheaper than cigars. I also believe it’s slightly healthier.

Student: OK.

A week later.

Fred: How is it?

Student: It’s nice. Because it’s more complicated than cigarettes, I smoke less overall. I also don’t have morning coughs anymore.

Fred: Good.

A month later.

Fred: Still enjoying your pipe tobacco?

Student: Yes. It’s a whole different feeling than constantly tugging at a cigarette. Feels intellectual somehow.

Fred: Want to upscale some more?

Student: What’s next, nicotine patches?

Fred: No. You want the feeling of inhaling smoke. Why don’t you purchase some native American smoking herbs and leafs – non tobacco. From now forward, mix the herbs with the tobacco. Never smoke full tobacco again, always mix. And combine your pipe session with voicing your intentions. Turn it into an intention-ritual. This upscales the whole thing.

Student: OK.

A month later.

Fred: How about you transition to herbs only?

Student: I’m already doing herbal-only smokes, I’ve reduced tobacco to one smoke a day.

Fred: Good. You can stay with that or upscale even more to herbs only.

Student: Sounds good. You were right that I am addicted to the feeling of inhaling smoke more than the nicotine itself.

Etc.
