I teach Meditation because Deep silence of Mind is the basis of many different states of well-being. But even if you are too lazy to meditate (which most people are), there are a few facts I can tell you which will calm even the mind of the non-Meditator. These facts are:
* You actually know nothing. You need presume no reliable knowledge of anything at all. The "know-nothing" state is an attitude you can enter, from which the mind naturally calms down and you come from a space of spontaneity. Many times one is able to help people effectively, because you know nothing about their issues and do not share their History and Beliefs. If I know nothing, I can allow Intuition to guide things. Or I can say "I have no clue what any of this means, dear Higher Self/God, please reveal what it means to me". This kind of surrender and letting go has a calming effect (if it is not misused to give up self-reliance).
* Resist nothing. Another way to say this is "Say Yes to Everything". No, I don't mean externally and verbally. I mean inwardly. Inside, embrace and welcome anything and everything that happens in the here/now. Even if you are saying "No" to someone externally/verbally, say "Yes" to them inside. You see, most people say "Yes" outside while they really mean "No" inside. I am recommending you say "Yes" inside, no matter what. As you embrace everything that happens you live from the implication that everything that happens is supposed to happen...that the Universe is perfect. And for you it will turn perfect. Say "Yes" to the here-now, the present moment. Know that every time you lose the here-now, you are already back in the here-now. Every time you realize you lost Awareness, you are back to Awareness. To resist nothing does not mean to no longer discern between positive and negative, but to welcome the positive as your souls joy and the negative as a stepping stone on the path of life.
* Realize that the content of the mind is just not that important. The mind is like a TV-set that just babbles on whatever it was told throughout life. Its a phantasmagoria. Its a recording-device. If you dont believe that its not-you, try this: Right after waking up, in that very split second, ask what your name is. Or have someone ask you. You will notice a completely blank mind, without a clue of what your name is. Only then does the mind begin to switch on, creating all types of definitions of who you are. You are not your memories either. Memories are mind-content. In lower and higher states of consciousness and energy, a human experiences memory gaps and memory loss...proving that ones "memory" is only valid in a limited strata of being. Your entire thinking-apparatus is impersonal, like hair growing. Do not give it more importance than that, and it will calm down naturally. You juice it by thinking its "you" and its "important". If you stop flooding it with stimuli and importance and misemotion, it calms down.
* Heed the recommendations of the London Subway system that keeps saying "Mind the Gap", to draw attention to the empty space between the subway train and the platform. That is actually a great Mantra because Mind is indeed a Gap. If you look carefully you will notice that Mind is mostly silent, except when you pay attention to it. It may be more silent if you dont try to silence it in the first place. Maybe all these Meditation-Manuals are actually achieving the opposite of silencing the mind.
* Concentration calms the mind. You cannot control all thoughts all of the time. But you can concentrate on something, by which all mind-noise recedes. If you are laden with problems, check if you lack concentration...concentration for your work, for friends, for projects, for whatever. Deep silence of the mind can also be experienced when something grabs your attention in great fascination...such as beauty. Beauty can actually make the mind go still for awhile.
Here's an exercise: Take a walk through town or the countryside. Notice something. Keep your awareness there for half a minute or a minute, feeling and perceiving that thing, place, object, person, space, idea or plant. Then move on to the next thing, place, object, person, space, plant, idea. Continue for hours and start experiencing deep silence of mind. It will have you feel more high than any earthly substance.
