The Mystery of Identity
As taught in Parallel Universes of Self, it is not only what you think, feel and do but even more primarily who you are that determines your reality. Who you are regulates your thinking, feeling and doing, filters your perception, makes you attract one thing and not another. In the aforementioned book I describe how people suffering from multiple personality disorder have been witnessed to experience dramatic and sometimes shocking changes when they shift identity. Scars they had suddenly disappeared and then later reappeared, good eyesight turned to bad eyesight and vice-versa, voice and demeanor change, etc. MPD is of course not desirable as the dramatic changes are under the control of foreign entities and not your conscious self. Not only people with MPD have identity-shifting issues, we all do to some extent. It can be hilarious to note the difference in someones behavior when he thinks he is alone and unwatched vs. in a social situation vs. in a for him very important situation. If you’re demeanor does not change too radically from being alone to being with others, thats a sign of identity-integrity, meaning you are integrated and whole and do not need to flip and flop all the time.
However, applied deliberately and lovingly, “identity shifting” can create good changes for you. In fact, if you are unwilling to change, I dont even know if you can achieve what you say you would like to achieve. If you want to improve your relationship, this requires a shift within you. If you want a better position at work, this requires a shift within you. No technique, book, program, spell, medicine can replace that inner shift.. Those things may facilitate the shift, but it still has to come from you. And do you realize how quickly you can shift your entire reality by shifting your identity and mood? Some examples:
* He was nervous about the talk he will give, but the moment he steps on stage he straightens his spine, takes a deep breathe and his entire aura and attitude change.
* They were having really bad fights until one of them decided to just drop it and become a bigger person.
* He was struggling with a lower back problem for two decades when suddenly he just decided to leave the preoccupation with his back behind him and be a healthy person. And then he was.
These sudden shifts are steps into parallel time lines, parallel identities in which both the past and future are different and they can be accomplished within split seconds. Many do prefer gradual change over time, but rapid change is possible through strong and decisive intent.
The soul loves defining itself as various identities. I always chuckle when someone says “I am a ______” (fill in political, religious, anti-religious, status-indicating position) with utmost seriousness. I say “Really?” and look them deep in the eyes, well knowing the soul is not any of that but only playing a role. The only natural identities on earth are things like gender, age, ethnicity. The more positions and identities one accumulates, the narrower perception and thus experience become. For example, my professional identity may be “I am a coach” or “I am an author”, but some people are surprised that I go around hardly ever mentioning that those are the things “I am”. By continually affirming that that is who “I am” I limit my realm of experience to a very narrow band and could only relate to others “as an author” or “as a coach”. This expectation is then reflected from outside when people look at me seeing the coach/author rather than merely a human being. If you forget that these Identities are only temporary, you may become attached and self-important, further limiting your sphere of experience.
In short: If you want more zest in life, be different now and then. But allow that change to come from a firm foundation of knowing who you are. Instead of changing and flip flopping unconsciously, allow your change to be deliberate.
